  • mieux comprendre comment les parasites résistent aux médicaments utilisés pour prévenir et traiter cette maladie : recherche des gènes impliqués, de l’origine de cette résistance ainsi que de son délai d’apparition et de disparition en fonction de la pression médicamenteuse s’exerçant dans une zone géographique donnée ;

Research, medical biology and education

The laboratory of parasitology at the Institut Pasteur de la Guyane: i) studies the parasites responsible for malaria, Plasmodium ssp, and their responses to drug pressure ii) seeks to better understand the transmission of the disease in French Guiana and iii) develops new diagnosis methods. These activities aim to better control or even eliminate this disease in the Amazon. Since the late 1980s, it has housed the National Reference Center (NRC) for Malaria, and, since January 2014, the WHO Collaborating Center for surveillance of antimalarial drug resistance.

The team includes five permanent members. Postdoctoral fellows, or doctoral students also reinforce the team according to the projects. Each year, the lab members are involved in training the youngest. We are training students from BTEC Higher National Diploma, Bachelor to Master degree. If you would like to join our team, please do not hesitate to contact us. We speak French, English and Portuguese.

Research programs are linked to the public health perspectives in the region. They aim to:

  • better understand how parasites resist to the drugs used to prevent and treat this disease through the research of genes involved, the study of the origin of resistance, its time of appearance and disappearance under drug pressure in a given geographic area;
  • better fight against the disease by seeking to understand the places and determinants of transmission in the region, the behavior of individuals towards the disease and by developing and evaluating new diagnostic methods.
